British Sculpture from the 1950-1960s

Exorcising the Fear: British Sculpture from the 1950-60s, 11th Jan - 3rd Mar 2012

Taking the sixtieth anniversary year of the XXVI Venice Biennale of 1952 as its starting point "Exorcising the Fear" will explore a pivotal point in the history of British sculpture. Returning to the essay by Herbert Read, which left an indelible mark on the history of art with the phrase 'the geometry of fear', the exhibition aims to recapture the excitement and vitality of the moment when eight young British sculptors - Robert Adams, Kenneth Armitage, Reg Butler, Geoffrey Clarke, Lynn Chadwick, Bernard Meadows, Eduardo Paolozzi and William Turnbull - burst onto an international scene and jump started a chain reaction that brought about a crucial sculptural renaissance in the history of British sculpture, the impact of which can still be felt today.

Located in a purpose-built gallery near the main entrance to Kings Place, Pangolin London is reminiscent of the South Bank. The complex contains one of the city’s few galleries dedicated to exhibiting sculpture. Since opening in 2008 it runs a rotating exhibition programme of the highest quality and curates a changing exhibition of large scale sculptures in the public spaces and on the canal-side at Kings Place. A series of talks and lectures are held to coincide with the programme of exhibitions which includes works by established and emerging sculptors: Lynn Chadwick, William Tucker, Ralph Brown, Jon Buck, Terence Coventry, Abigail Fallis, Peter Randall-Page and Ann Christopher, and other well known contemporary names. This is a welcoming place to visit - and pleasant relaxing environment close to the hustle and bustle of Kings Cross St Pancras. Other nearby attractions worth a visit are Camley Street Nature Reserve, the canal water ways and Central St Martins art school's new home.
